That’s why it’s important to know what to do if you’ve ever in a vehicular accident.

Everyone suffers in a car accident — the victim, and the person at fault. Physical disabilities happen as well as financial setbacks. One person gets injured to the point where they can no longer function alone.

Worse, a fatality happens.

Family members of the persons involved suffer as well. They’re left to care for a person who’s newly disabled, and they suffer an emotional and financial loss when they lose a person.

1. Always Stop When a Vehicular Accident Happens

Getting into an accident is a scary situation, especially if you’re at fault. What you do not want to do is drive away.

Always stop when you get into an accident.

Driving away puts you at risk of suffering health and legal consequences. When you move in panic, you have no idea if you’re hurt or if you’ve hurt someone else. Not to mention most states consider driving away from an accident a hit and run.

That can land you in jail. Stop, think, and wait for help.

2. Call for Help

Some accidents happen in places where you can’t immediately get out of your vehicle and assess the damage. After you collect yourself, call for help right away.

If it’s safer to remain in your vehicle, call for the police and an ambulance, if necessary.

Even if no one’s hurt, it’s smart to get an official police report for your insurance company and your records. Don’t move your car, unless it’s blocking traffic. Moving a wrecked car in a busy place like a highway may pose a greater threat to your safety.

3. Check on Your Passengers

If you’re traveling with passengers during an accident, calmly ask if they’re okay. Make sure they respond then ask if they’re injured.

Don’t attempt to move any injured persons in the vehicle, including yourself. Ask about their injuries and wait for help.

4. Take Pictures

If you can safely exit your vehicle, check on the person in the other car, and protect the scene.

Take pictures right away before moving anything. Zero in on visible damage and injuries. Also, take pictures of the overall scene—stop signs, lights, debris in the road, and anything that looks abnormal.

5. Talk to Witnesses

Sometimes it’s hard to define who’s at fault in an accident. In that case, rely on bystanders as witnesses.

Talk to people who saw what happened and get their information. This helps if you’re forced to hire an attorney in the future. You’ll need someone to corroborate your side of the accident details.

Even if you don’t find a witness, still talk to a legal profession. Sit down for a free consultation and find out your rights. Read more here if you need more information on that.

Know What to Do

A vehicular accident isn’t like falling down on a bike. It’s a stressful event that can have fatal results.

Make a note of these steps and know what to do if you’re ever in that situation.
